THE BRAIN AND NERVES

A Study about Reaction Time

Reaction Time (RT)

The average human reaction time is 215 milliseconds according to the data collected so far. Based on what we’ve read, RT is the interval time between the presentation of a stimulus and initiation of the muscular response to that stimulus.

Reaction time test

Have you ever thought of anything that can affect your reaction time?

There are several methods to test our reaction time. One example is during our Science class, we did an activity wherein our reaction time was tested by catching a falling ruler. After the activity is over, we realized how fast and slow an individual can react to a sudden situation. Other factors that can affect our reaction time includes age, gender, physical fitness, fatigue, distraction, alcohol, personality type, and whether the stimulus is auditory or visual.

Researchers conducted a study that was published back in November 1980 resulted that women have a faster decision time than men, but men have a faster movement time. It’s concluded that on this particular task, the cognitive performance of women is superior.

Ways to improve your reaction time (RT) :

Whether you want to ensure safe driving in poor conditions or improve your reaction time in a competitive sport, working on your reflexes is a great habit to keep up throughout your life. It’s a fun one, too! Some of you might ask, “How can we improve our reaction time?”

> Try ball drills. If you’re practicing for a sport, this is a great way to work your athletic skills and reflexes at the same time.

> Work on balance exercises. It can help to improve your reflexes.

> Try agility drills. Place a few cones at a distance apart and run between them as fast as you can.

These are just some ways that can help our body get used to the feeling of that move or technique, so it becomes more natural to perform, even at higher speeds.

Instances wherein quick RT proved beneficial :

It’s determined by genetic factors and age. For instance, its value decreases, improves during loading, and it’s impaired by fatigue. Simple reaction time of an average individual is 0.16–0.2. It can be improved by training. Response and accuracy time can differ from each other. Response time increases, while accuracy is bounded at probabilities 0.5 and 1.0, and as probability correct approaches 1.0, variance decreases.

  1. Before reading this blog, I am aware that men have faster reaction times than women. This angered me because I do not like the fact that inequality between the ability of men and women regarding reaction time exists. This blog helped me with how I can exercise my reaction time! I am sure that even if my reaction time is not as fast as how men react, at least my reaction time improved, thanks to this blog. – Juvy Ann Guadalupe

  2. The blog is really helpful for those who don’t know about Reaction Time. Given with their examples how to improve our reaction time, I believe that my dance training helped alot as we have to move our body according to the beat, stay balanced and be agile – Tablan

  3. I agree that women are faster in deciding while men are faster in movements. An experience would be when we were playing a ball game, the guys were really quick in catching it while we girls weren’t that much quick like them. However, not because they are quicker means we can’t catch up with them for there are practices to improve reaction time such as trying ball games, doing balance excercises, and agility drills, as stated in the blog. – Eleanor Javier

  4. What I like about this blog of yours is that the information you explained is easy to understand and very well said. I was captivated by the details of the topic, the appearance, it helps me reflect on my daily practices, and how they can help improve my reaction time. Thanks to this blog, I can definitely improve my reaction time just by following the practices or examples recommended. – Chanice Maxine Ansaldo

  6. This blog helped me to understand and connect the ideas and facts presented. Indeed, we can also increase or improve our reaction time by playing ball games, balance exercises, agility drills, etc.. It is also relevant in our lives, for instance, situations like driving a car, playing sports, or other events requires fast actions and reaction. It can either result in a good or bad way. However, we must remember that all people have different speed in reacting/ responding to a situation but we can change ourselves through different challenges that will surely improve our reaction time.

  7. I really thought that it’s just normal for us to react to specific events but actually it is not and now i know that we can actually practice or improve our reaction time to beat rt of males hahaha chour

  9. This blog is extremely informative, as well as interesting and illuminating. After the results of the 1980 research, I am proud to be a female because faster movement is insignificant if you make the wrong decision. But as someone who believes that she has a slow reaction time, I really enjoyed the ways you gave on how to improve reaction time. Because of this, I can finally apply effective techniques to improve my reflexes and live an overall better lifestyle. – Rebecca Yap

  11. With this blog I am able to know that even though we, females, are slower to men in terms of reaction to movement; women are actually faster in making decisions. Another thing that I liked in the blog is that it provided example activities that we can actually do to enhance our reaction time.

  15. Robinne Cariaga – The blog was very detailed and it made the topic clearer and easier to understand. I do agree that women have a faster decision time and that men have faster movement time based on my experiences with my brother. I’m glad that there are ways to improve one’s reaction time and I would definitely do it for it can help improve my reflexes, skills, and overall health condition. This blog is really great and helpful for those who only know a little about reaction time. Nice blog !

  16. I actually had no idea that women had a faster decision time than men, given that I am a very indecisive person—and I have a slow reaction time too! I guess I’ll be trying out those different ways you gave to improve my reaction time. Overall, this blog was really clear and organized, and I’m glad I was able to learn from it. 🙂
